TLV Goes International!

The Hungarian Tolkien Society proudly announces the launching of the “Quendi” category of the Tolkien Mailing Competition. It will be in English, open to any individual participant, but recommended for those between 15 and 35. In the course of the Competition you will face different challenges like quizzes, riddles and creative tasks. The five rounds of the competition will last from October to March. The application deadline is prolonged to 06. October, 2013!

In the previous years it was organised only in Hungarian, and only for Hungarians. Competitors were school groups of the 10–18-year-old. They competed in three categories of different difficulty level, called Hobbits, Dúnedain and Noldor. Every year we had more than a hundred participants from all over the country, who were interested in the world created by Tolkien. But now, for the very first time, we’re going international!

This new international category, called Quendi, is open to individual participants. Both the challenges and the communication will be entirely in English—but don’t be afraid! You won’t need to be perfect in English to take part in the Competition. You only have to be able to understand the texts by Tolkien, and to write an essay—it won’t need to be of university level.

Originally we announced the Quendi category for the age group between 15 and 35, but seeing the international responses, we reconsidered this. The competition is still recommended for the "young adult" age group, because it was originally meant for schoolchildren, and we do not plan to make big changes in the style. But the application is open for anybody who feels young enough for this game - altough it can be too childish for adults or the competition too strong for the 15-years-olds.

At the same time, we set a maximum limit of 60 for the number of participants. The number of applications is still very far from this limit, but if it exceeds the limit, then we would prefer that at least half of the participants should be younger than 35. So we kindly ask everyone and especially those under 35 who are interested in the competition, to apply as soon as possible and thus leave us time to plan the process.

TLV logo: a swordsman watches a golden dragon hovering over the Lonely MountainParticipation in the Quendi category requires a thorough knowledge of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion and perhaps The Children of Húrin. Some questions (riddles, quizzes, etc.) will refer to other works by Tolkien, but you will have about four weeks for each round, so you will have enough time to look up in the books everything you need.

There will also be some creative challenges. For example, you may be asked to describe a situation, write a short poem, make a drawing or take a photograph, etc. We would like to be proud of our participants, so we ask you to share the rights of your creative productions royalty-free. The best of your works—with due credit to the authors/artists—might be published by the Hungarian Tolkien Society, e.g. on our website:, or in our journal, the Lassi Laurië.

The contest starts in early October and continues until the end of March. Every month you will receive the questions of the next round, and you will have to submit your solutions until the indicated deadline. Communication will be via e-mail. We have two e-mail adresses for this purpose: to send your solutions, for registration, questions, and comments. We are happy to answer all your questions about the competition—except disclosing the solutions of the actual tasks.
In the international category there will be no prizes, only the honour of success publicly announced and a certificate via e-mail—but in turn you don’t have to pay any registration fee.

If you want to participate, please fill in the registration form (see below) and send it to with the subject “registration for TLV”. The application deadline is
06 of October, 2013.
You may want to check our YouTube video (actually with Hungarian captions, but the images will tell a lot about TLV).
