Programme

Conference (24-25 June / Friday-Saturday)

The 6th Tolkien Conference in Hungary is organised as a part of the anniversary programme with the theme of "Myth, Imagination, Literature". The official languages of the conference are English and Hungarian. Translation will not be provided in the Hungarian sessions, but three of the four sessions will be exclusively in English: on Friday afternoon and on Saturday. Online participation will also be possible through Microsoft Teams.

Venue: Károli Gáspár University (1088 Budapest, Reviczky u. 6.)

Other daytime activities (25-26 June / Saturday-Sunday)

Various activities are planned for the weekend days: creative workshops, board games, escape rooms, a Middle-earth fashion show etc. They are all in Hungarian by default but let us know if you are interested to join, and we will provide more information about those activities which can be made available in English.

Venue: Károli Gáspár University (1088 Budapest, Reviczky u. 6.)

Pub Night (23 June / Thursday)

If you arrive early, you are welcome to join us in the humble opening party on Thursday night. The main focus of the evening is friendly socializing, and it is a great opportunity to get to know each other (more). There will also be a Pub Quiz, a small photo and video display of the twenty years of the society, board games and also a live concert given by the one and only MTT Tolkien Tribute Band (formed just for this occasion) playing songs of Middle-earth and the society itself.

Venue: Pótkulcs (1067 Budapest, Csengery utca 65/b)

"Líthas" - Midsummer Bonfire (24 June / Friday)

We have this campfire meeting every summer on the Friday (sometimes Saturday) evening closest to Midsummer Eve: we watch the sunset together, smoke and burn our own food on the fire, lit red candles, talk and sing, and some of us usually also wait for the sunrise. Now as part of the anniversary celebrations, there will be some extra programme included: jugger game on the field nearby while the sun is up; and a challenging test in the dark forest at late night.

Venue: "Kecske-hegyi kőfejtő" (near Szépvölgyi út; public transport bus from: 1036 Budapest, Kolosy tér)

Dance & Party (25 June / Saturday)

Although the birthday celebrations will last until Sunday evening, we decided to hold the closing party on the day before, on Saturday, to make sure all those can attend it who will need to leave for home earlier on Sunday. The programme is: dancing ‘til dawn! We will start with a folk-dance session, where circle and chain dances of one of the most easy-to-learn Hungarian folk dance style will be danced (teaching will also be included, so do not be afraid). This will be followed by a regular party with our most talented self-appointed DJs.

Venue: Károli Gáspár University (1088 Budapest, Reviczky u. 6.)

Stage Night (26 June / Sunday)

The last night of our celebrations will be dedicated to performances and toasts, and of course, the cake! The audience will see performances of different type, a dance and also a play (in Hungarian) prepared especially for this occasion, and other performances. This is also the night where we will hand out our annual awards for our most enthusiastic and hardworking members, and this is also the time for the candles to be blown and the cake to be cut. This evening will start earlier, at 4 PM.

Venue: Károli Gáspár University (1088 Budapest, Reviczky u. 6.)

For foreign guests

The Hungarian Tolkien Society is looking forward to welcoming members of the numerous other Tolkien societies among the audience of the conference and among the participants of the other anniversary celebrations.

Most of the conference programme will be in English, but the language of the other organised activities is Hungarian by default. Please let us know which parts of the programme you intend to join, and we will try to make them more available for English speakers. You are also welcome to join any of the community gatherings where the language of the conversation is up to the participants.

Please let us know if you want to add anything to the programme: a workshop of your own, songs at the campfire, an introduction of your society, or even a performance of any kind.

All programme venues are in Budapest and can be reached easily by public transport.

There is no accommodation organised for this programme, but for those who prefer staying with friends to ho(s)tels, we will try to find hosts among the members of our community.

If you have any questions, please contact Flóra Orthmayr (Metaflora) at metaflora/at/tolkien/dot/hu.
